Hydroxyethyl Cellulose For The Adhesive On Paper And Cardboard
Company Profile
HEC - Introduction
Hydroxyethyl cellulose is a white or pale yellow, odorless, non-toxic, fibrous or powdered solid. It is prepared by the ification reaction of alkaline cellulose and ethylene oxide (or chloroethanol). It belongs to the class of nonionic soluble cellulose s. As a nonionic surfactant, in addition to thickening, suspending, binding, floating, film-forming, dispersing, water-retaining, and providing a protective colloid, it also possesses the following properties:
1. HEC is soluble in hot or cold water and does not precipitate at high temperatures or boiling, giving it a wide range of solubility and viscosity characteristics, as well as non-thermal gelation.
2. Its nonionic nature allows it to coexist with a wide range of other water-soluble polymers, surfactants, and salts, making it an excellent colloidal thickener for solutions containing high electrolyte concentrations.
3. Its water-retaining capacity is twice that of methylcellulose, and it exhibits excellent flow control properties.
4. Compared with the recognized methylcellulose and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, HEC has the lowest dispersibility, but the highest protective colloid capacity. Therefore, hydroxyethyl cellulose is widely used in the fields of oil extraction, coatings, construction, medicine and food, textiles, papermaking and polymer polymerization reactions.
Hydroxyethyl Cellulose (HEC) Applications
Hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) is used as an adhesive, surfactant, colloid protective agent, dispersant, emulsifier, and dispersion stabilizer. It has a wide range of applications in coatings, inks, fibers, dyeing, papermaking, cosmetics, pesticides, mineral processing, oil production, and pharmaceuticals.
1. Hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) is generally used as a gluing agent on paper and paperboard. The paper glued with HEC can be used for high-quality printing of images.
2. Hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) is used as a sizing agent in the textile industry and as an adhesive, thickening, emulsifying, and stabilizing agent in the electronics and light industries.
3. Hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) is used as a thickener and fluid loss reducer in water-based drilling and completion fluids, particularly for thickening brine drilling fluids. It can also be used as a fluid loss reducer for oil well cement. It can cross-link with polyvalent metal ions to form a gel.
4. Hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) is used in water-based gel fracturing fluids for petroleum fracking and as a dispersant for polymers such as polystyrene and polyvinyl chloride. It can also be used as a thickener for latex thickening in the paint industry, a humidity sensor in the electronics industry, and a cement retarder and moisture retainer in the construction industry. It is also used in ceramic glazing and as a toothpaste binder. Hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) is also widely used in printing and dyeing, textiles, papermaking, medicine, hygiene, food, tobacco, pesticides, and fire extinguishing agents.
5. Hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) is used as a surfactant, colloid protective agent, and emulsion stabilizer for emulsions of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate, as well as a thickener, dispersant, and dispersion stabilizer for latex. Hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) is widely used in coatings, fibers, dyeing, papermaking, cosmetics, medicine, and pesticides. It also has numerous applications in the oil extraction and machinery industries.
6. Hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) exhibits surface activity, thickening, suspending, binding, emulsifying, film-forming, dispersing, water-retaining, and protective properties in solid and liquid pharmaceutical preparations.
