Retains Moisture, Softens The Dough, Resists Aging HEC

Company Profile

HEC, when used in baking products, effectively improves dough stability and gas retention, resulting in more fluffy, fuller breads and cakes with a finer, more uniform texture. Its excellent water-retention properties lock in moisture, leaving the finished product soft and moist, delaying starch aging, reducing dryness, crumbling, and cracking, and significantly extending shelf life. It also enhances dough's kneadability and shapeability, reducing the risk of collapse and deformation, and increasing yield. HEC is colorless, odorless, and has good compatibility, does not affect fermentation or flavor, and is suitable for all types of breads, cakes, pastries, and other baked goods. It is a high-quality additive for improving quality and production stability.

Hydroxyethyl Cellulose (HEC) Applications

Papermaking and Ink

HEC can be used as a varnish for paper and board, as well as a protective sealant for inks. HEC offers the advantage of being independent of paper size and can be used to produce high-quality images. Its low surface permeability and high gloss also reduce costs.

It can also be used for printing on paper or board of any size, or for calendars. For paper sizing, HEC is typically used at a dosage of 0.5 to 2.0 g/m².

HEC improves the water retention of paint colors, especially in high-content latex coatings.

In papermaking, HEC offers other advantageous properties, including compatibility with most gums, resins, and inorganic salts, rapid solubility, low foaming, low oxygen consumption, and the ability to form a smooth surface film.

In ink manufacturing, HEC is used in the production of water-based copy inks, which dry quickly and provide excellent color diffusion without sticking. ● Fabric Sizing

HEC has long been used for sizing and finishing yarns and textile materials. This sizing can be washed out of the fibers by washing. When mixed with other resins, HEC finds wider application in textile finishing, serving as a forming agent and binder in fiberglass and as a finisher and binder in leather sizing.

Textile Latex Coatings, Adhesives, and Adhesives

Adhesives thickened with HEC are pseudoplastic, meaning they thin under shear but quickly return to a high viscosity, improving print clarity.

HEC controls water release and allows continuous flow on the printing roller without increasing adhesive. Controlled water release allows for more open time, facilitating filler retention and forming a better adhesive film without significantly increasing drying time.

HEC is used as a binder in acrylic coatings and as an adhesive for non-textile processing. It is also used as a thickener in textile primers and adhesives. It is non-reactive with fillers and remains effective at low concentrations. ● Dyeing and Printing of Textile Carpets

In carpet dyeing applications, such as the Kusters continuous dyeing system, few other thickeners can match the thickening effect and compatibility of HEC. Its excellent thickening properties, solubility in a wide range of solvents, and low impurity content prevent interference with dye absorption and color diffusion, enabling printing and dyeing without the constraints of insoluble gels (which can cause spotting on fabrics) and the high technical requirements for uniformity.

Other Applications

Firefighting—

HEC can be used as an additive to enhance the coverage of fireproofing materials and has been widely used in the formulation of fireproofing "thickeners."

Foundry—

HEC can improve the wet strength and shrinkage of cement sand and sodium silicate sand systems.

Microscopy—

HEC can be used in film production as a dispersant for the preparation of microscope slides.

Photography—

It is used as a thickener in high-salt fluids used in film processing. Fluorescent Tube Coatings—

Used as a binder and stable dispersant for fluorescent agents in fluorescent tube coatings, applied in a uniform, controllable ratio. Different grades and concentrations of HEC can be selected to control adhesion and wet strength.

Electroplating and Electrolysis—

HEC protects colloids from varying electrolyte concentrations; in cadmium plating baths, hydroxyethyl cellulose promotes uniform deposition.

Ceramics—

Can be used to formulate high-strength adhesives for ceramics.

Cables—

Waterproofing agents prevent moisture from penetrating damaged cables.

Toothpaste—

Used as a thickener in toothpaste manufacturing.

Liquid Detergents—

Mainly used to adjust the rheological properties of detergents.

HEC Key Properties

Thickening Properties
Hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) is an ideal thickener for coatings and cosmetics. In practical applications, its thickening properties, combined with its suspension properties, safety, dispersibility, and water retention, yield even more optimal results.

Pseudoplasticity
Pseudoplasticity refers to the property in which the viscosity of a solution decreases with increasing rotational speed. Latex paints containing HEC are easy to apply with a brush or roller and improve surface smoothness, thereby increasing work efficiency. Shampoos containing HEC have excellent flowability and a high viscosity, making them easy to dilute and disperse.

Salt Tolerance
HEC is very stable in highly concentrated salt solutions and does not decompose into ions. Its application in electroplating can enhance the surface integrity and gloss of plated parts. More notably, it maintains excellent viscosity even in latex paints containing borates, silicates, and carbonates.

Film-Forming Properties
HEC's film-forming properties enable its application in a wide range of industries. In papermaking, HEC-containing glazing agents prevent oil and fat penetration and are used in the formulation of other papermaking solutions. In textile production, HEC increases fiber elasticity, reducing mechanical damage. During fabric sizing and dyeing and finishing, HEC acts as a temporary protective film, which can be washed off the fibers with water when no longer needed.

Water Retention
HEC helps maintain an ideal moisture level in a system. Even a small amount of HEC in an aqueous solution can achieve excellent water retention, reducing the water requirement during system formulation. Without water retention and adhesive properties, cement mortar will lose strength and cohesion, and clay will also lose plasticity under certain pressures.
