2-Ethylhexyl Nitrate (shortened as 2-EHN, also called isooctyl nitrate, CAS No.27247-96-7) is a transparent, colorless organic liquid produced via nitration reaction of 2-ethylhexanol, with the molecular formula C₈H₁₇NO₃ and molecular weight 175.23 g/mol. Featuring low freezing point, favorable oil solubility and stable liquid state under regular storage conditions, this chemical blend well with petroleum diesel, biodiesel and various fuel mixtures without stratification.
Physical & Chemical Properties
It is barely soluble in water but miscible with diesel, gasoline, ethanol, and most organic solvents. Key physical parameters include a density of 0.963 g/mL (25 °C), a closed-cup flash point of around 81 °C, a melting point below -50 °C, and a boiling point ranging from 208 °C to 212 °C.
Chemically, it remains stable under normal storage conditions but will gradually decompose under high temperature, strong light or contact with strong oxidizing agents, releasing toxic nitrogen oxide gases. It features an energetic nitrate functional group (), which enables rapid decomposition and heat release during fuel combustion.
