HEC - Introduction
Hydroxyethyl cellulose is a modified cellulose with many excellent properties. It is a water-soluble polymer produced by reacting natural cellulose with ethylene oxide.
Application Fields of Hydroxyethyl Cellulose (HEC)
- The product can dissolve smoothly in both cold and hot water systems. No precipitation will occur even under boiling or high-temperature environments, without thermal gelation behavior, so it owns flexible solubility and adjustable viscosity performance.
- Due to its non-ionic chemical structure, HEC has good compatibility with various water-soluble macromolecules, surface active agents and inorganic salts. It works perfectly as a colloidal thickener in liquid systems rich in electrolytes.
- Compared with methyl cellulose, its water-locking performance is doubled, together with outstanding fluidity regulating capability.
- This raw material features steady viscosity performance and anti-mold property. Meanwhile, it brings great thixotropy for easy tank opening and ideal leveling performance during construction use.
Applications:
1. In water-based latex coatings: HEC, as a protective colloid, can be used in vinyl acetate emulsion polymerization to improve the stability of the polymerization system over a wide pH range. It also ensures uniform dispersion of additives such as pigments and fillers during finished product manufacturing, stabilizing and providing a thickening effect. It can also be used as a dispersant in suspension polymers such as styrene, acrylates, and propylene. It significantly improves thickening and leveling properties in latex paints.
2. Oil Drilling: HEC acts as a thickener in various muds required for well setting, cementing, and fracturing operations, enhancing fluidity and stability. This improves the mud's carrying capacity during drilling and prevents large amounts of water from entering the oil reservoir, thereby stabilizing the reservoir's production capacity.
3. Construction and Building Materials: Due to its strong water-retention capacity, HEC is an effective thickener and binder for mortar. Adding it to mortar improves fluidity and workability, prolongs water evaporation time, increases initial concrete strength, and prevents cracking. It can be used in plastering, bonding, and plaster putty, significantly improving water retention and bonding strength.
