Product Description
The finished product of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose appears as a white powder or a white, loose, fibrous solid with a particle size that passes an 80-mesh sieve. Different ratios of and hydroxypropyl content and varying viscosities result in different performance characteristics. Similar to methylcellulose, it is cold-water soluble but hot-water insoluble. However, its solubility in organic solvents exceeds its water solubility. It is soluble in anhydrous methanol and ethanol, as well as in chlorinated hydrocarbons such as dichloromethane and trichloroethane, as well as , isopropyl alcohol. When dissolved in water, it combines with water molecules to form a colloid. It is stable to acids and alkalis, remaining unaffected within a pH range of 2 to 12. While non-toxic, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose is flammable and reacts violently with oxidants.
