1. Basic Overview
Ethyl cellulose (EC) is a non-ionic cellulose product and an organo-soluble cellulose derivative, synthesized from natural cellulose as the raw material through a multi-step chemical conversion process (CAS No.: 9004-57-3). Its ethoxyl content is generally controlled at 44.0%–50.0% (on dry basis), making it a widely used hydrophobic polymer excipient in coatings and personal care.
Physical Appearance
Off-white or pale yellow powder/granules, odorless and tasteless, with good fluidity and excellent thermoplasticity; it can be processed into dense and flexible films.
2. Key Physical and Chemical Properties
- Extremely low hygroscopicity and prominent hydrophobicity: insoluble in cold/hot water, glycerin, and propylene glycol, and stable in high-humidity environments;
- Excellent electrical insulation: resistant to light, heat, oxidation, and weathering, with high chemical stability;
- Resistant to concentrated alkalis, dilute acids, and salt solutions, and non-combustible;
- Readily soluble in most organic solvents, including ethanol, ketones, esters, aromatic hydrocarbons, and halogenated hydrocarbons;
