Product Description

Hydroxyethyl Cellulose (HEC) for Oil Well Drilling and Water-Based Drilling Fluids

Company Profile

Shanghai Prior Chemical Scientific And Technical Co., Ltd. (Grade A Tax Credit) was established in 2016 and specializes in the supply and international trade of industrial chemicals and specialty materials.

Leveraging resources associated with China North Industries Group Corporation (NORINCO GROUP), the company supplies a broad range of cellulose and specialty chemicals, including Hydroxyethyl Cellulose (HEC), Hydroxypropyl Methyl Cellulose (HPMC), Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC), Ethyl Cellulose (EC), and Nitrocellulose (NC).

The company also independently manufactures integrated nail-fastening products and holds equity interests in the production and commercialization of Ammonium Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC-NH₄). It has established a strong position in the domestic market for HPMC used in automotive exhaust honeycomb ceramics, with a market share of nearly 70%.

Hydroxyethyl Cellulose (HEC) Overview

Hydroxyethyl Cellulose (HEC) is a nonionic, water-soluble cellulose produced from natural cellulose through an etherification reaction with ethylene oxide. It is supplied as a white to pale-yellow, odorless, non-toxic granular or powdered material.

HEC provides excellent thickening, rheology modification, suspension, water retention, film formation, binding, dispersion, emulsification, and protective colloid properties.

Because of its nonionic character and compatibility with electrolytes and other water-soluble materials, HEC is particularly suitable for oil well drilling, completion fluids, water-based drilling fluids, and other petroleum-related applications.

Key Properties

1. Excellent Water Solubility

HEC dissolves in both cold and hot water and maintains stable viscosity over a broad temperature range. It does not readily undergo thermal gelation or precipitation when heated, providing reliable performance in demanding formulations.

2. Excellent Electrolyte Compatibility

As a nonionic cellulose, HEC can coexist with various water-soluble polymers, surfactants, and inorganic salts. This makes it suitable for salt-containing and brine-based drilling fluid systems.

3. Effective Water Retention and Fluid-Loss Control

HEC helps retain water within aqueous formulations and can reduce fluid loss during drilling and completion operations, contributing to improved filtration control.

4. Efficient Rheology Modification

HEC provides controllable viscosity and suspension properties, helping maintain the desired flow characteristics and improve the carrying capacity of drilling fluids.

5. Strong Protective Colloid Performance

HEC can help stabilize dispersed particles and improve formulation uniformity, supporting consistent performance during drilling operations.

HEC for Oil Well Drilling

Hydroxyethyl Cellulose is widely used as a thickener, rheology modifier, suspension stabilizer, and fluid-loss-control additive in water-based drilling and completion fluids.

In drilling applications, HEC can help control fluid viscosity and filtration properties while maintaining compatibility with other components in the drilling-fluid system. It is particularly useful in water-based and brine drilling fluids where stable rheological performance and filtration control are required.

Main Functions in Oil Well Drilling

  • Viscosity enhancement

  • Rheology modification

  • Fluid-loss control

  • Improved cuttings suspension

  • Filtration control

  • Improved dispersion stability

  • Water retention

  • Compatibility with brine and electrolyte-containing systems

HEC can also be incorporated into oil-well cementing and completion fluids as a fluid-loss-control and rheology-modifying additive.

Other Applications of Hydroxyethyl Cellulose

In addition to oil and gas applications, HEC is used in a variety of industrial formulations.

Coatings and Paints

HEC functions as a thickener, dispersant, protective colloid, and rheology modifier, helping improve viscosity control, storage stability, and application performance.

Construction Materials

HEC is used in cement-based and gypsum-based materials to improve water retention, workability, viscosity, and formulation stability.

Personal Care and Household Products

HEC can be used as a thickener, stabilizer, film former, and suspending agent in shampoos, lotions, gels, and other water-based formulations.

Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Applications

HEC can serve as a thickener, stabilizer, film-forming agent, and hydrophilic matrix material in various pharmaceutical and healthcare formulations.

Textile, Paper, and Other Industries

HEC is also used as a sizing agent, binder, thickener, stabilizer, and processing aid in textile, paper, printing, dyeing, and other industrial applications.

Product Designation

The HEC product designation consists of an application-field code and a viscosity specification code.

For example, B3000 indicates:

  • B — Application field: construction, coatings, oil drilling, and chemical industries

  • 3000 — Viscosity specification code

Application Codes

Code Application Field
D Latex paint industry
C Daily-use chemical industry
B Construction, coatings, oil drilling, and chemical industries
