CMC-NH4 stands for Ammonium Carboxymethyl Cellulose. It is a water-soluble cellulose derivative where the hydrogen ions of the carboxymethyl groups are neutralized by ammonium ions.
Unlike the more common Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC-Na), CMC-NH4 is specially valued in high-tech and high-purity applications because it leaves virtually no metal ash or residual alkali metal salts upon thermal decomposition (calcination).

Appearance: White to light yellowish powder or granules
Solubility: Soluble in water, aqueous alkali, and ammonia solutions; insoluble in organic solvents and mineral oils.
Thermal Behavior: Upon heating (typically above 105°C–150°C), it releases ammonia ($NH_3$) and converts into a water-insoluble acid-type cellulose (H-CMC).
SCR Denitration Catalysts: Used as a specialized binder in the manufacturing of high-end Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) catalysts. It avoids the alkali metal (sodium) poisoning/deactivation issues associated with standard CMC-Na, thus preserving catalyst activity and extending service life.
Lithium-Ion Batteries: Employed as an advanced eco-friendly aqueous binder for battery electrodes (such as graphite anodes). It provides excellent mechanical stability and helps improve long-term cycling performance without introducing contaminating metal ions.
Specialty Ceramics & Metallurgy: Utilized as a temporary binder in advanced ceramics or powder metallurgy where metal impurities must be strictly avoided during burnout/sintering stages.
Ash-Free Calcination: Completely decomposes or burns off cleanly without leaving residual metal ions (like $Na^+$), which can otherwise degrade electrical or catalytic performance.
Thermal Crosslinking/Insolubilization: Easily transforms into a water-resistant binder structure upon heat treatment.
