HEC - Introduction

Hydroxyethyl cellulose is a modified cellulose with many excellent properties. It is a water-soluble polymer produced by reacting natural cellulose with ethylene oxide.

Advantages of Hydroxyethyl Cellulose
  • Easy Solution Preparation: HEC can be dissolved in hot or cold water using simple stirring equipment, and the solution can be added directly to the product.
  • Compatibility: Because HEC is a non-ionic compound, it can be used safely within a pH range of 2 to 12 and is compatible with other components such as colorants, additives, salts, and electrolytes.
  • Easy Application: Because HEC is a pseudocolloid, the finished product will not experience dripping or streaking during application.
  • Coating: Because it does not reduce the surface tension of the product, it does not generate unnecessary foam during production. Furthermore, it does not cause defects such as pinholes and pores in the film formed due to foam formation.
Instructions

(I) Direct Addition During Production: This method is simple and time-efficient. Steps:

  1. Add purified water to a large bucket equipped with a high-shear mixer.
  2. Start stirring at a low speed and slowly sift the hydroxyethyl cellulose evenly into the solution.
  3. Continue stirring until all particles are wet.
  4. Then add the mildew inhibitor and various additives, such as pigments, dispersing aids, and ammonia.
  5. Stir until all the hydroxyethyl cellulose is completely dissolved (the solution viscosity increases) before adding the other components in the formula and reacting.

(II) Prepare the mother liquor for use: This method first prepares a mother liquor with a higher concentration and then adds it to the product. The advantage of this method is its flexibility and can be added directly to the finished product, but it must be properly stored. The steps are similar to steps (1-4) in method (I). The difference is that a high-speed stirrer is not required. Only a stirrer with sufficient power to keep the hydroxyethyl cellulose evenly dispersed in the solution is used. Continue stirring until it is completely dissolved into a viscous solution. It should be noted that the mildew inhibitor must be added to the mother liquor as soon as possible.

Applications
  • In water-based latex coatings: HEC acts as a protective colloid in vinyl acetate emulsion polymerization, improving the stability of the polymerization system over a wide pH range. It helps disperse pigments, fillers, and other additives evenly in finished products, stabilizing and providing thickening properties. It can also be used as a dispersant in suspension polymers such as styrene, acrylates, and propylene. In latex paints, it enhances thickening and leveling properties.
  • In oil drilling: HEC acts as a thickener in various muds required for drilling, well setting, cementing, and fracturing operations, enhancing fluidity and stability. During drilling, it improves the mud's carrying capacity and prevents large amounts of water from entering the oil reservoir, thereby stabilizing the reservoir's production capacity.
  • In construction and building materials: Due to its strong water-retention capacity, HEC is an effective thickener and binder for cement pastes and mortars. Its addition to mortar improves fluidity and workability, prolongs water evaporation time, increases the initial strength of concrete, and prevents cracking. Used in plastering, bonding plaster, and gypsum putty, HEC improves water retention and bond strength.
  • Used in toothpaste: Due to its strong salt and acid resistance, HEC ensures the stability of the toothpaste paste. Its strong water retention and emulsifying properties prevent toothpaste from drying out.
  • Used in water-based inks: HEC helps the ink dry quickly and prevents penetration.

HEC is also widely used in textile printing and dyeing, papermaking, and daily chemicals.

Precautions for Using HEC
  • Hygroscopicity: All grades of hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) are hygroscopic. The moisture content is generally below 5% at the factory, but may be higher due to varying transportation and storage conditions. When using, simply measure the water content and deduct the weight of the water from the calculation. Never expose it to the atmosphere.
  • Dust is explosive: All organic powders and hydroxyethyl cellulose dust in the air will explode when encountering fire when in a certain proportion. Appropriate operations should be carried out to avoid the generation of dust in the atmosphere as much as possible.
