Isooctyl nitrate, abbreviated as 2-EHN, CAS: 27247-96-7, is a colorless, slightly yellow, transparent, oily liquid with a slightly pungent ester odor. It is completely miscible with diesel fuel.
It is mainly synthesized from isooctyl alcohol, nitric acid, and sulfuric acid, and is a general-purpose diesel fuel cetane number improver. Adding a small amount can improve the auto-ignition performance of diesel fuel, improve cold starts, reduce black smoke and carbon deposits, and it contains no metallic ash, will not damage vehicle exhaust treatment devices. It is widely used in blending plants and refineries to blend diesel fuel for vehicles, construction machinery, and marine use, and can also be used as an organic synthesis additive. It is packaged in UN-certified IBC tonnes or iron drums. It is a flammable and hazardous chemical and must be stored and transported away from light, ventilation, and fire sources.
