Hydroxypropyl Methyl Cellulose (HPMC) is a high-performance non-ionic cellulose derived from natural refined cotton through chemical modification. Due to its excellent water retention, rheology control, thickening ability, and workability enhancement, HPMC is widely used in construction materials, including self-leveling compounds, tile adhesives, cement-based mortars, gypsum products, and wall putties.
In self-leveling applications, specially developed low-viscosity HPMC grades provide an ideal balance between excellent flow performance and effective water retention. They help maintain smooth leveling properties while preventing water separation, material segregation, surface defects, and shrinkage cracking during curing.
HPMC improves the overall performance of self-leveling systems by enhancing stability, adhesion, and surface quality, making it an essential additive for modern dry-mix construction formulations.
| Application | Recommended Grade | Main Benefits |
|---|---|---|
| Self-Leveling Compounds | E5 | Excellent flowability, anti-segregation, improved surface smoothness |
| Tile Adhesives | K100M, E15 | Improved water retention, longer open time, enhanced adhesion |
| Wall Putty | K100M | Smooth application, better crack resistance |
| Cement Mortars | E5, E15 | Improved cohesion, pumpability, and workability |
| Gypsum-Based Products | E15 | Better consistency, sag resistance, and surface finish |
| Water-Based Coatings | E15 | Improved stability and uniform film formation |
| Personal Care Products | E5 | Thickening, suspension, and texture improvement |

HPMC forms a protective colloidal structure within the cementitious system, slowing down water evaporation and ensuring adequate hydration. This contributes to higher mechanical strength, better surface hardness, and improved durability of the final floor layer.
The optimized rheological properties of low-viscosity HPMC allow self-leveling materials to spread easily and achieve a smooth surface while maintaining proper stability.
HPMC improves suspension stability by controlling particle movement, reducing water separation and uneven distribution of components during application.
By controlling moisture migration and improving internal structure, HPMC helps minimize plastic shrinkage, cracking, and surface defects after curing.
