Hypromellose (INN): Hypromellose, also known as hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), is a nonionic cellulose compound. It is a semisynthetic, inert, viscoelastic polymer commonly used as a lubricant in ophthalmology and as an excipient or excipient in oral medications. It is commonly found in a variety of commercial products. Its chemical formula is [C6H7O2(OH)3-x-y(O(CH2)3OH)x(OCH3)y]n, which can be simplified as [C6H7O2(O(CH2)3OH)2(OCH3)]n.
As a food additive, hypromellose can serve as an emulsifier, thickener, suspending agent, and a substitute for animal gelatin. Its Food Codex code (E code) is E464.
